Tile Calculator
Find how many tiles and boxes you need for a floor or wall from the area and your tile size, with an adjustable waste allowance for cuts and breakage. Calculates in your browser.
Tiles to buy
-
Show the math
Each tile’s area sets how many cover the space, after adding waste:
tile area = width × length ÷ 144
tiles = area × (1 + waste%) ÷ tile area
Add about 10% waste for straight layouts and 15–20% for diagonal or patterned ones. Tiles round up to whole boxes. Keep a few spares from the same batch, dye lots vary. All math runs locally in your browser.
What this does
A tile calculator finds how many tiles and boxes a floor or wall needs from the area and your tile size, with a waste allowance for cuts and breakage.
How to use it
- Enter the area to tile.
- Enter your tile size.
- Add a waste allowance.
- Read the tiles and boxes to buy.
How it works
The area is divided by the size of one tile, then rounded up to whole boxes. Add 10% for straight layouts and more for diagonal patterns.
tiles = area ÷ tile area × (1 + waste)
Understanding your result
The waste allowance is the number that protects you: about 10 percent for a straight layout and more for diagonal or patterned work where cuts multiply. Buy it all from one lot so the shading matches, and keep a few spare tiles after the job, because a discontinued line is impossible to match when you later need to replace a cracked one.
Example
A 100 sq ft floor in 1 sq ft tiles with 10% waste needs about 110 tiles.

Frequently asked questions
How much waste should I add?
A 10% allowance is typical for straight layouts; add 15–20% for diagonal or herringbone patterns and busy rooms with many cuts.
How are tiles per box handled?
Enter the count per box and the tool rounds the total tiles up to whole boxes, since tile is sold by the box.
Should I keep spares?
Yes. Keep a few tiles from the same batch for future repairs, dye lots vary and a later box may not match.
Do you store my numbers?
No. Everything is calculated locally in your browser.
