How it works

Each tap records a timestamp. The tempo is the average gap between taps, turned into beats per minute:

BPM = 60,000 ÷ average interval (ms)

More taps give a steadier reading; if you pause for a few seconds the counter resets so a new tempo starts clean.

Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere, it all runs in your browser.

What this does

A tap tempo tool reads the tempo of any music in BPM as you tap a button or the space bar in time, averaged over your taps for a steady result.

How to use it

  1. Play the music.
  2. Tap the button or space bar in time.
  3. Keep tapping for a steadier reading.
  4. Read the BPM.

How it works

Each tap records a timestamp; the tempo is 60,000 divided by the average gap between taps. More taps give a more accurate reading, and a long pause resets the average.

BPM = 60,000 ÷ average gap (ms)

Understanding your result

The reading is an average of your taps, so the more beats you tap and the steadier you are, the closer it lands on the true tempo; a few taps give a rough guess, a dozen a reliable one. A long pause resets the average, which is how you start fresh on a new section. Round to a whole number for a sequencer, since live tapping rarely nails an exact integer.

Example

Taps averaging 500 ms apart read as 120 BPM.

Frequently asked questions

How does tap tempo work?

Each tap records a timestamp; the tempo is 60,000 divided by the average gap between taps. More taps give a steadier, more accurate reading.

Why did the count reset?

If you pause for a couple of seconds the tool assumes you are starting a new tempo and clears the previous taps so the average stays clean.

Can I use the keyboard?

Yes, press the space bar in time instead of clicking. The reading updates live as you tap.

Is anything recorded?

No. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere, it all runs in your browser.
