How it works

Sunrise and sunset are computed from the Sun's position for your latitude and longitude on the chosen date, using the standard NOAA solar equations. "Sunrise" is the moment the Sun's upper edge meets the horizon (an altitude of −0.833°, which includes atmospheric refraction).

The three twilights mark how far the Sun is below the horizon: civil (−6°, enough light for outdoor activity), nautical (−12°, the horizon is still visible at sea), and astronomical (−18°, the sky is fully dark).

Near the poles the Sun can stay up or down all day, the tool reports midnight sun or polar night when that happens. Everything is calculated locally in your browser; your location is never sent anywhere.
