Show the math
Tax and tip are added to the subtotal, then the grand total is split evenly:
total = subtotal + tax + tip · per person = total ÷ people
The tip is figured on the pre-tax subtotal, which is the conventional approach. Enter a different bill amount if you prefer to tip on the post-tax total.

What this does
A bill split calculator divides a group bill or event dinner evenly, adding tax and tip on the pre-tax subtotal to get the grand total and the amount each person owes.
How to use it
- Enter the subtotal.
- Set the tax and tip.
- Enter the number of people.
- Read the grand total and each share.
How it works
Tax and tip are added to the subtotal, then the total is divided evenly. The tip is on the pre-tax subtotal by convention; add tax into the subtotal to tip on the post-tax figure.
per person = (subtotal + tax + tip) ÷ people
Understanding your result
An even split is only fair when everyone consumed roughly the same; if one person had far more, split by item instead so no one subsidises the table. By convention the tip is on the pre-tax subtotal, so adding tax into the subtotal first tips you on the higher figure. The rounded per-person amount may leave a few cents over, which one person can absorb.
Example
A $120 subtotal with 8% tax and 18% tip is about $151, or $38 each between four.
