Overland Travel Calculator
Work out how long a journey takes at slow, normal or fast pace, split into whole travel days plus leftover hours. Calculates in your browser.
Travel time
-
Show the math
Time is distance divided by speed, then split into whole travel days (each a set number of hours) plus the leftover hours.
hours = distance ÷ pace (mph)
Standard paces cover roughly 18 (slow), 24 (normal) or 30 (fast) miles in an 8-hour day.

What this does
An overland travel calculator works out how long a journey takes at slow, normal, or fast pace, split into whole travel days plus leftover hours.
How to use it
- Enter the distance.
- Pick a travel pace.
- Set the hours per day.
- Read the days and hours.
How it works
A standard eight-hour day covers about 18 miles slow, 24 normal, or 30 fast. Set your own hours to model forced marches.
time = distance ÷ pace speed
Understanding your result
The travel days plus leftover hours assume a standard eight-hour day at your chosen pace, with the trade being that a fast pace covers ground but penalises perception and a slow pace allows stealth. Set custom hours to model a forced march, but remember that pushing beyond eight hours risks exhaustion, so the fastest route on paper is not always the wisest.
Example
A 72-mile trip at normal pace takes 3 travel days.
