Steps to Distance Calculator
Convert steps into distance (and back) using a stride length estimated from your height, with calories from the distance walked. Calculates in your browser.
Distance
-
Show the math
Distance is steps multiplied by your stride length:
distance = steps × stride · stride ≈ 0.414 × height
Walking stride is about 0.414 of your height; running stride is longer. This is an estimate, for best accuracy, count your steps over a measured 100 m and divide to find your true stride.
What this does
A steps-to-distance calculator converts steps into distance (and back) using a stride length estimated from your height, and adds the calories burned over the distance walked.
How it works
Distance is steps times stride length. If you do not know your stride, the tool estimates it from your height, about 0.414 × height for walking.
Distance = steps × stride length
How to use it
- Enter your number of steps (or a distance).
- Enter your height, or your own stride length.
- Choose km or miles.
- Read the distance and estimated calories.
Understanding your result
The stride estimate is a good starting point, but stride varies with speed, leg length, and terrain. For best accuracy, measure your own stride over a known distance.
Example
At a stride of about 0.72 m, 10,000 steps is roughly 7.2 km.

Frequently asked questions
How is distance worked out?
Distance = steps × stride length. If you do not know your stride, the tool estimates it from your height (about 0.414 × height for walking).
How accurate is the stride estimate?
It is a good starting point, but stride varies with speed, leg length, and terrain. For best accuracy, measure your own stride over a known distance.
How many steps is a mile?
Commonly around 2,000–2,500 steps per mile depending on height and pace. The tool gives a personalised figure from your stride.
Do you store my data?
