How it counts
Characters include spaces, emoji and line breaks, exactly what the platform counts toward its limit. Words are runs separated by whitespace; hashtags start with # and mentions with @.
A negative "remaining" means you're over the platform's limit and the post will be cut off or rejected. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, it's all counted in your browser.
What this does
A caption character counter counts characters, words, lines, hashtags, and mentions in your caption, and shows how many characters remain against each platform’s limit.
How to use it
- Paste or type your caption.
- Read the character and word counts.
- Pick a platform.
- See the characters remaining.
How it works
Everything counts toward the limit — letters, spaces, punctuation, emoji, and line breaks. Common limits: 280 for X, 2,200 for Instagram and TikTok, 3,000 for LinkedIn, 5,000 for a YouTube description.
Understanding your result
The remaining count tells you how much room each platform allows, but the more useful habit is front-loading: most feeds truncate with a More link, so put the hook and key words in the first sentence. Hashtags and mentions count toward the limit too, so trim them before they crowd out the message.
Example
A 250-character caption leaves 30 characters on X.
